SXSW SCHEDULE SO FAR!!!

I am so stoked for this! This film festival works perfectly with my college schedule right now. I feel like the opening of the festival with Kick-Ass and The White Stripes is going to be awesome!

A Month Behind
I have a month’s worth of content to post this weekend. I can not believe I’ve fallen behind by this much.
Currently riding my bike around, taking pictures, and watching too many movies. Let’s just say Ran is currently one of my favorite movies I have seen in a while.
Content update soon!

A Town Called Panic Review

After the animated films of 2009 had passed by, A Town Called Panic by Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Pata came flying out of nowhere and aims to give a belly full of laughs.
To get straight to the point, this film is not as emotionally engaging as Pixar’s Up or rooted with themes of mortality like Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. This is a film with its own unique and playful voice that begs the viewer to follow the main characters — Horse, Cowboy and Indian — to the ends of the world.
The story is as simple as it is random. Cowboy and Indian have forgotten Horse’s birthday and decide to build him a brick barbecue pit. They accidentally order 50 million bricks instead of 50, which leads to the destruction of their house and then to an adventure to the center of the earth.
There’s a romantic subplot involving Horse and his piano teacher if anyone is looking to turn this into a date movie. If anything, the only minor flaw is the story drags on for a little too long.
One of the great achievements of the film is its weird humor. Things like talking animals that play instruments and attend school, and a robot penguin that launches snowballs across the world, stirs up tons of chuckles throughout film. A tremendous achievement is made with this film because the humor is for all ages and there isn’t a single fart joke for quick laughs.
While hilarious, A Town Called Panic’s art direction makes this film stand out from the rest. The film doesn’t shy away from the fact there are toys moving around the screen but instead embraces it and wholeheartedly shows them off. The landscapes and skies are a quirky homage to Van Gogh’s paintings.
The film is definitely worth a drive to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin for those looking to break away from the current trend of computer animation.
Zlam Dunk @ Triple Crown
I danced and took pictures of Zlam Dunk last night at Triple Crown in San Marcos. They opened for the couch and as usual put on a great show. I think this was my favorite photo of them last night. There’s something about watching Charlie run through the crowd with a basketball hoop. Everyone goes crazy!

Want
I am going to start saving for a new bike. I thought Id go as minimal as possible with the exception on the wheels. I feel there’s a nice contrast with the yellow and blue and it creates a good balance. My friend Anthony made a few suggestions on color choice that I really liked and Chris pointed me in the direction of affordable single speed bike.

Got the Job!

Above are my mug shots because I recently got the job to write movie reviews for my university paper at Texas State University! My film review column is called Worth the Drive and is over films that aren’t big blockbusters at the local cineplex, but films where I have to drive from San Marcos to Austin to see such greats as A Single Man or Moon at the Alamo Drafthouse or the Reagle Arbor.
So Stoked!
My first review for the paper is over Antichrist and I’ll be sure to post it asap!

To New York!
I am off to New York City till the 9th. I figured this would be a good way to start the trip. This is probably my favorite opening to any movie ever.

Got my Zine!
So I finally got my zine in the mail today from wearnowinspace! A nice little item here featuring some great shots. There’s this sense of freedom of ones self in these images and there are some amazing portraits. My favorite one is definitely the portrait of the woman amongst bamboo.
Thank you once again for the zine, I’ve been waiting for it and it was totally worth it. Keep up the great work!
Haircut

I got a hair cut today and figured this would be a good way of introducing myself.
Hello. I am Bobby. It’s great becoming acquainted with you! I pursue photography, cinema, pie, black coffee, and almost all of Woody Allens Films
Fantastic Mr. Fox

I must say I am really enjoying all the dark children movies that are coming out as of lately. This movie was quite delightful and pretty dark at the same time. I really enjoyed the fight scene between the William Dafoe’s character and George Clooney’s character. The movie had some astounding aesthetics to it. Pure eye candy.

Prepping for the Weekend
So I am preparing for this weekend. Eight prints are due by Monday and I have two rolls shot already but in all reality you can never have too many photos. So a fresh roll in the camera and three ready to go. Also I’ve been playing with tilt shift and color mill on my iphone to try and give my snapshots a little more Ummph.

In Grizzly Bear We Trust
An amazing video
Albums of October
Andrew Bird: Noble Beast

For some reason this is the album I always end up falling back because I work a very stressful schedule during the week. The reason this is so successful outside his masterful technique and soothing whistles is that the music on this album fits pretty much any situation where I might find myself needing a music break. Whether it be on the morning commute, the dark room, working at the Star, or kicking back with a book, this album has no boundaries.
Also with fall weather slowly creeping up on us, that opener syncs perfectly with the first cold front of the fall break.
Atlas Sound: Logos
I actually found this band this morning. Wow this album is great. A good variety of loud and soft songs. It feels like a smoothie of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, and Caribou. Good stuff all around but I plan on listening to this some more.
The Flaming Lips: Embryonic
This is one hell of an album right here. I haven’t heard the Lips do anything more than partake in David Lynch’s and Danger Mouse’s Dark Night of the Soul. The first song I heard by them was Watching the Planets and it was when they performed on Conan. I was simply awestruck the entire length of the performance. Psychedelic gongs and black coffee go very well together at 8 A.M. in the morning. The new album is very heavy and very radical but still maintains that Lips feel to it.
