Yes the “Ah Ha” Moment

I find it simply amazing how a small stretch of highway, some clouds, and a simple smile have made me start to realize what makes me tick in life and what doesn’t. The following quote by Woody Allen made me really start to re-examine my life and got the gears in me moving.

“There’s an old joke – um… two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of ‘em says, “Boy, the food at this place is really terrible.” The other one says, “Yeah, I know; and such small portions.” Well, that’s essentially how I feel about life – full of loneliness, and misery, and suffering, and unhappiness, and it’s all over much too quickly.”

Yes the world can be a lonely place and it’s amazing how the act of birth is beginning of the end. With this in mind though I simply have no time to waste. Instead of exploring a virtual landscape and fighting aliens, I have decided to engulf myself with real connections, guitar jams, the creative process, and cooking.

I now approach life with the pavement streaming below me, the clicks of tired gears shifting, the air cutting my throat like a knife and the sun warming my body better than any artificial air condition system could.

To the joys of really looking at this world and trying to squeeze every bit of juice out before it goes bad!

i concur…. life is too short to be holed up in this concrete jungle. resolution for this year is to travel more to the country side…. give my lungs a chance to process clean unpoluted air once in a while.

  2. I think it’s amazing how much time is wasted on computers these days bragging about what you’ve done or doing at the moment to people you’ve never met or having a make believe farm etc. Sometimes I need to kick myself and say “do something useful on the internet or get off it and take a look outside!” or the hours just slip away….

Agreed. We’ve lived too long dependent on our computers, reading about others’ accomplishments. Time to get out there and do something!

well stated. I’ve been feeling the same way. Life is too short to be sucked down into “technology” and a virtual life. Instead, when i get outside I actually experience living. Whether it’s just birds chirping and clouds flying by (nice picture btw)- it’s better than a flat screen.

There’s just something cool about connecting with real people over a cup of coffee that instant messaging and emailing (or even phone calls) can’t match.

Get out there – live actually – live.

  5. I like your approach, “not wasting any time.” You have but one life to live, so live it wisely :)

  7. that’s a good way to approach life….yes life is meaningless without connections and bonds.

  8. Amen, to cooking and real connections. Although, I have to mention that your last photo (the beautiful cloud) makes me think of “I wandered lonely as a cloud” by Wordsworth. Beautiful and inspiring.

  11. great post! As I was reading the opening, I was thinking that the exact picture you painted (“a small stretch of highway, some clouds, and a simple smile”) is what makes me appreciate life!

  16. This is the way I view life, it’s nice to see other people taking time to really appreciate what is around them. I personally have taken time away from the city to see how the more than half of the world lives – in a remote village… There is nothing better than taking a time out to just appreciate life, without the stresses of the day to day drain that grind us all down over time.

    Love your photography.

  17. beautiful different angle of seeing life. The angle which always try not to see. Creativity makes u young. You made the essence of life in less than 200 words. Great one.

  34. The funny thing is I’ve been thinking more and more lately about how much I need and want to feel connected with nature. I’d love to be walking on unsettled dirt, surrounded by tall trees, with that fresh earthy smell reaching my nose. I need more of that–more outdoors!

    March 14, 2010 at 1:49 pm

    • sounds relaxing. if thats what u want… then ask urself what is stopping u right now from doing it?
if u end up finding another reason that holds u back. then ur not being serious to urself in believing u deserve it. every human deserves a taste of life that has them feeling phenomenal. so go for it… dont think twice enjoy what the world is offering u…

  37. Words well spoken…err, typed. I agree with all of you absolutely 100% that far too much of our time is spent wasting our precious lives in front of our cherished computers and televisions. Why not go out and enjoy life…the present is a gift that comes with an unsolicited expiration date.

  39. I think everybody has (or should have) an ‘Ah ha’ moment at least once in their life (if not repeatedly!) – and there’s no denying the truth of what you say – there are better ways we could be spending our limited time on the planet, and we often confuse our priorities, filling our time with meaningless activities which don’t fulfil.

I guess for me the question would be “what is more fulfilling” – and that, I’m sure, would include appreciating nature, people, ‘real life’ a bit more. The other question that prompts me is “what can I invest my life into that has real meaning and purpose” – personally, I’m passionate about helping with poverty relief efforts in developing countries – having seen the conditions in which so many billions of people live, I consider time invested into helping improve their lot in life as being incredibly worthwhile.
